Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart and into the lungs to be replenished with the oxygen and nutrients the body needs to function and stay healthy.

Thread veins or spider veins are small blood vessels that appear in small areas just underneath the surface of the skin. It is commonly seen on the legs, ankle or the foot. Facial veins or spider veins on the face may be due to hereditary or general rosacea, a condition that causes redness on the face. It is usually purple, blue or red in colour and has an appearance like a spider’s web or a linear pattern. Spider veins are usually pain free but are very unsightly to some.

Varicose veins on the other hand, are larger and deeper veins that are lumpy and have a deep purple color. It is caused by blood collecting in superficial veins which lie just beneath the skin, often in the legs. These leg veins have a series of valves which help blood back towards the heart, but in some cases the valves become weakened or damaged and no longer close properly. Thus, blood is able to flow backwards; collecting in the vein. Varicose veins may sometimes cause leg discomfort and usually get worse with time. Among the contributing factors in having varicose veins are: age, leg injury, obesity, lack of exercise, weight fluctuation, constriction, and prolonged sitting and standing.

Cutera® CoolGlide Laser Vein Removal Therapy is the recommended treatment for unsightly facial and leg veins. It is a US FDA approved non-surgical spider and varicose veins treatment that involves minimal discomfort. The Cutera CoolGlide Laser system delivers pulses of light energy, which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel, which is later absorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, just where it should be.
