Botulinum Toxin – Botox – Dysport
Looking to ward off facial lines and wrinkles that make you look sad, tired, or grumpy? Botulinum toxin is one popular and effective treatment for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming.
At Cutis Laser Clinics, we have two types of botulinum toxin injections: Botox and Dysport. Both are known for treating and preventing wrinkles, but have different potency of trace proteins.
The brand Botox is the most popular botulinum toxin product in the market. It is produced by the company Allergan, which is also the maker of JUVÉDERM dermal fillers. Botox has been around for over 20 years and has been FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.
Botox contains a specific type of botulinum toxin A, called onabotulinumtoxinA (ONA). It is formulated with accessory proteins that protect the neurotoxin and allow the product to last a bit longer.
This injectable is commonly used for treating dynamic wrinkles or those that are formed due to repetitive facial expressions. It can help minimize the appearance of:
- Moderate to severe frown lines (angry 11s)
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Wrinkles in the corner of the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Upper lip wrinkles (smoker’s lines)
How does Botox work?
Botox works by temporarily blocking the signal from a nerve to a muscle, using the neurotoxin protein, Botulinum toxin. This reduces muscle contractions that can cause lines, which softens and relaxes the wrinkles.
Botox treatment is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, proven safe by millions of people who experienced the effective results.
The brand Dysport is another popular neurotoxin treatment. It is currently marketed by Galderma, which is also the manufacturer of Restylane facial fillers. The FDA approved Dysport for cosmetic use in 2009, but it has been used and approved safely in Europe for many years prior to this.
Dysport contains another type of botulinum toxin A, called abobotulinumtoxinA (ABO).It is also formulated with the same accessory proteins as Botox, but in a smaller version. Further purification resulted in lesser protective or accessory proteins in Dysport.
Dysport is cosmetically used to temporarily minimize the appearance of moderate or severe frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows). It may be injected in five different points around eyebrows and forehead. Dysport can also be used smooth:
- Horizontal forehead wrinkles
- Wrinkles in the corner of the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Wrinkles at the upper bridge of the nose (bunny lines)
How does Dysport work?
Dysport works much the same way as Botox. It treats wrinkles by lessening muscle activity in the area of concern. It temporarily prevents muscle contractions that cause lines and wrinkles. Stilling and relaxing the muscles causes the skin above to become smoother, with less noticeable wrinkles.
What are the benefits of botulinum toxin?
Apart from being a safe and effective wrinkle treatment, Botulinum toxin injectables can also be used to:
- Treat early signs of aging
- Lift droopy eyebrows
- Reshape the jawline or contour the lower face when injected in the masseter muscles (used for chewing and clenching).
- Help patients who grind their teeth (bruxism)
- Treat migraines, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
Is botulinum toxin safe?
Yes, the US FDA approved Botox and Dysport for cosmetic use or for treating facial wrinkles. However, individuals with milk allergy (cow’s milk protein) or have history botulinum toxin sensitivity, and those who are pregnant and breastfeeding should not get the injections.
Is Botulinum toxin only for women?
No. These injectables are for both men and women. In fact, many men have used Botox injectables (or “Bro-tox”) to smooth forehead lines or create a more youthful look. It is also an increasingly popular facial/cosmetic treatment for men.
Do botulinum toxin injections hurt?
The injections are quick with minimal to no pain at all. Topical anesthetic cream is also applied before the treatment, providing a numbing sensation. This makes the whole procedure tolerable and more comfortable.
How soon will I see results?
With Botox, it can take about three to four days to see effects and about two weeks for the full and maximum results. With Dysport, on the other hand, effects can be seen two to three days after the injection, and about two weeks for the final results.
How long do the results last?
You can expect results of Botox to last between 3 and 6 months. Dysport, on the other hand, can last for up to four to five months. Repeated or touch-up treatments are required to maintain the results. Just be sure to look for a skilled injector or aesthetic doctor with a conservative approach in administering the treatment.
