Men and women have different needs and goals when seeking cosmetic treatments. And while female patients continue to dominate the aesthetic market, many men are also expressing their desire to get cosmetic enhancements. Men also want to project a better self-image, as well as appear fit and healthy with the help of aesthetic treatments.

Men Seek the Help of Aesthetic Treatments to Look Their Best

Radical transformations or full-on makeovers don’t interest men. What they actually want are subtle enhancements that won’t magically shave years off their appearance. Dr. Sachin Shridharani, MD, a New York-based plastic surgeon, told Refinery29 that “men just want  to look like the best versions of themselves”.

What men want

The goal is not to look decades younger, but to appear more relaxed and refreshed, like making a fine line even finer. “The Future of Aesthetics” global trends report from Allergan Aesthetics shared some key drivers for the rising number of male patients seeking aesthetic procedures. These include:

  • The need to look fresh, fit, and sharp for work
  • Some might be coaxed by their partners and are unsure of their needs
  • There is now a wider coverage of aesthetic treatments for men
  • A lot less stigma, with men becoming more comfortable with their aesthetic routines

Many patients are also starting to value their appearance more. In fact, according to a report on the male aesthetics market (Global Industry Analysis, Trends, Market Size and Forecasts up to 2024), about 52% of male patients consider their looks to be important, and around 29% touch up their looks throughout the day.

Other influences for this rising demand include:

  • Increased awareness and availability of procedures
  • Wanting to look good in pictures (for dating or social networking sites)
  • More competition in the job market
  • The increasing number of male celebrities who were open about their enhancements

What are the most popular aesthetic services for men?

BOTOX OR BROTOX remains the most popular and most-requested aesthetic treatment for men. According to a statistics report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 265,000 botulinum toxin treatments (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) were administered to men in 2020, a trend that is predicted to stay.

Do take note that Botox for men is different from women. Male patients have more muscle mass in the forehead and brows and may therefore need more dosage to achieve desired results. Check out our previous post about Brotox or everything you wanted to know about Botox for men.

HAIR RESTORATION is also among the most popular treatments that appeal to men.  A survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery revealed that for 60% of men, hair is considered their biggest aesthetic concern. Hair issues like baldness, thinning hair, and a receding hairline can cause emotional distress and problems.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) remains one of the most popular hair transplant procedures. Many male patients, however, are also seeking minimally or non-invasive treatments for hair restoration. These can include the use of US FDA-approved medications, microneedling, and scalp micropigmentation.

DERMAL FILLERS are also popular among men. Fillers are commonly used to restore volume loss and soften folds and wrinkles, resulting in a more refreshed and youthful look. Many men are turning to these injectables to have a strong, well-defined jawline, a facial feature that is linked to masculinity.

A scientific report featured in Nature journal also suggested that a sharp, strong jawline gives men more sex appeal. This also denotes a  stronger immune system and higher levels of testosterone. This has then contributed to the popularity of non-surgical jawline contouring or using fillers (and other treatments) to have a more chiseled or defined facial profile.

HAIR REMOVAL treatments also interest men, with some seeking to reduce extra hair on their chest, back, and legs. There are also those who prefer a completely hair-free or smooth look in certain areas. Laser or light-based hair removal treatments provide an effective and long-term outcome, as they target the hair follicles and inhibit hair regrowth.

It is also good to know that the advancements in laser technology have paved the way for virtually pain-free treatments that also work well on different skin tones. Multiple sessions are required to treat all follicles because hair grows in cycles all over the body. After multiple sessions, you can achieve about 80 to 90% of permanent hair reduction.

BODY SHAPING AND FAT REDUCTION treatments are also rising in popularity among men. Non-surgical alternatives like Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) appeal to both genders, as it can shrink fat bulges without going under the knife. A 2021 consumer survey from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) also reported that about 77% of respondents were bothered by excess fat on any part of their body.

Cryolipolysis treatments like Coolsculpting and ZLipo use controlled cooling temperatures to freeze and kill fat cells. This can reduce fat layer thickness and give the area a more contoured appearance. Fat freezing, however, is not the only treatment that can shape your body and reduce fat. At Cutis, we also have other safe and effective body contouring procedures, including.

  • BTL Vanquish ME – uses contactless radiofrequency heating to kill fat cells and reduce fat or decrease the circumference of the abdomen (midsection) and thighs.
  • Acoustic shockwave therapy (X-Wave/ZWave) – uses wave pulses to break down fat and tissues that cause cellulite.
  • ZField Dual – uses electromagnetic pulses to stimulate involuntary muscle contractions. It can help you burn fat, lift your buttocks, and add more definition to your abdominal muscles.
  • ThermoSculpt – uses diathermocontraction to help you burn fat and tone muscles in the abdomen, arms, thighs, knees, and buttocks.
  • BTL Exilis Ultra 360 – combines radiofrequency and ultrasound to shrink fat cells, improve skin laxity, and reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks.

Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore caters to both men and women. We have cosmetic injectables like Botox and fillers that can give you a more energized and refreshed look. We also have different hair removal methods if excess hair is your concern, and various body shaping procedures for a fitter and healthier appearance.
